What Is Vectorization?
Just about all digital images fall into 2 categories: Bitmap and Vector. Bitmap images are by far the most common. All bitmap images can be broken down into pixels, a mosaic of colored squares, and when bitmap images are resized, the pixels cause the image to look distorted. For instance, this smiley face may look crisp and sharp, but if we zoom in, we can easily see the pixels, and the image loses its appeal.
Vectors are basic elements (like points, lines, and polygons) that can be broken down mathematically. Vector Art, is art made up of vectors. The major benefit to vector art is its infinite ability to be scaled. You can literally take an image that is the size of a business card, and blow it up to the size of a bus (or a planet) with zero loss in quality.
So what does this mean for you? If you are like most companies, you may not have the necessary files needed to put your logo on brochures, business cards, or bumper-stickers. Just about anything other than your website requires that you have a vector copy of your logo.
Vector graphics can be converted to high quality bitmap graphics easily with the right software. This means that the next time you have a print company or a graphic designer work for you, giving them the vector file for your logo will satisfy any of their needs. The reverse, however, is not true. Even with the best software, converting a bitmap image to a vector image takes a delicate touch, and a keen eye. There are programs that can automate the process, but this still does not give professional results. Consider the following example:
